brightons boutique house label black key recordskicks off 2017 with a fantastic ep from label newcomer cinthie. cinthie is a well established force in berlin: as well as being a resident at key spots ipse and humboldthain club-where she spins heady vinyl only sets-she runs three much loved labels and collectives in beste modus, unison wax and beste freunde. as such, she is a true leader of the underground house scene who also runs a studio complex in berlin, and so is very much at the heart of the house conversation. kicking things off is the excellent house rhythms , a rugged, bass driven, deep house cut with flabby drums and snares and icy hi hats all sounding informed by classic deep house greats like ron trent. warm, soul infused pads emanate from the core and the whole unhurried affair really sucks you in with its cosy and romantic atmosphere. the second splendid offering is liberty, a much rawerand direct cut designed for peak time sets. again it is riddled with jazzy chords that have real soul, but the drums are exposed and banging and the whole thing barrels along at a sweat inducing pace. this is a typically classy offering from both artist and label that kicks off 2017 in real style.

italian house bastion vibraphone records has more than proven itself in the realms of classic deep house, but this new release from knlb certainly speaks to the new age of the label. the unknown producer makes a stunning entry with -second wind-, an effervescent breakbeat number that harks back to classic 90s mo wax sounds with its resonating piano licks and gritty drum samples. -apollo- meanwhile creates an interesting variation on the dub techno template with a wealth of instrumentation cavorting around a tripped out chord stab, and then -initialize- drifts off into blissful deep house meditation atop a purposeful beat. minimono swoop in to inject some direct funk into their remix of -intialize-, and a very fine job they do of it too.

first ever reissue of �salsita mami� by lisandro meza y su combo gigante, a highy sought-after discos fuentes �salsa dura� classic lp originally released in 1970. lisandro meza is one of colombia�s most talented all around musical giants. equally adept at playing musical instruments as he is at composition and singing, meza has recorded just about every type of colombian genre as well as his own decidedly colombian versions of salsa, afrobeat, funk and disco.

peripheral minimal is proud to present the new 12inch by the french electronic pioneer, philippe laurent, entitled, phoenix. this will be philippes second release on peripheral minimal after the infectious synthetic classic 12inch, mithra. phoenix is a three track ep featuring two brand new tracks on the a-side, phoenix (featuring philippe s trademark robotic vocals), and, agapao. meanwhile over on the b-side, we have the 13-minute electronic opus and highly representative of his early work, exposition 4, a never before released track from philippes extensive archive, and recorded in 1982. the e.p. is representative of philippe s latest forays into contemporary synth music, but still with a retro futurist edge and influenced partly by german pioneers kraftwerk/late 70s kosmische and au courant electro/synthwave acts, fitting into the current enthusiasm for early 80s synth pop and minimal wave. the ep is presented on white vinyl and limited to 300 copies. mastering by martin bowes @ the cage.

the first release of -syncretism- is a strong declaration of techno made by cressida. the ep includes 4 tracks, 3 written and produced by cressida and 1 additional mix is made by uvb. all the tracks have got a solid raw sound, an excursion between the hardest industrial, the classic uk acid sounds and new wave. the first track, toxic masculinity, is a punching tune characterized by raw drums, rough synth and break sequencies. second track, the uvb testosterone mix, represents the masculinity killer track, with a screaming human being in a dark environment. third track, snakecharmer, is the anthem killer track characterized by acid and big room sounds. neurotic x represents the other side of the label where the artist experiments his tone bringing you in a post industrial and wave scenario.

initial listens to inre rymden (swedish for inner space) reveal it to be a curious combination of slow-motion house music and salubrious new age funk. in this case, first impressions are accurate, and they should intrigue you enough to dive deeper into the paradisiacal vistas tommy awards paint here. the opening track prometheus introduces that feeling of sundown deliquescence that very few musicians can summon, as it locks into a laid-back groove that induces utmost serenity, buoyed by sublimely mellow guitar vibes that should make fans of manuel g�ttsching s ashra and phil manzanera s solo output spring to attention. draget conjures the sort of exquisite elegance and preternatural chill last heard on roxy musics 1982 lp avalon but somehow its even more blissed out than that boudoir classic. and so it goes for most of inre rymden: among the six tracks, only rexy hints at tension, courtesy of a bass line that sounds like it should score a prisoners walk to the electric chair. but thats tempered by guitar sighs of radiant melancholy, not unlike those lofted by popol vuh s daniel fichelscher. even when inre rymden gets relatively uptempo, as on hans logan, it still glides like gilded, glazed, balearic house jams, urged on by subliminal bongos and dappled with pastel guitar shimmers far off on the horizon. music is love and love is our music, runs tommy awards slogan (a sentiment beautifully echoed by david crosby on his revered 1971 album if i could only remember my name), but one could also argue that it is medicine a balmy ear massage that spreads healing frissons to all areas of your body and mind. tommy awards continue their miraculous act as scandinavians channeling the tropics with stunning audio verisimilitude.

this releases includes little goat and ana bhebak, two middle-eastern-influenced tracks, which naturally came together for this special release. a take-off for the fusion of the old arab classic music with the new beat making, middle east meets west in this release, from buttering trio s temporary point of view.

glyn -bigga- bush began his production career with rockers hi fi in the early 90s, co-writing several studio albums, a host of remixes and the infamous dj kicks - the black album. in 2000 he went solo as both biggabush and lightning head, making albums for sonar kollektiv and stereo deluxe as well as many more remixes. his sound reflects his love of dub reggae, analogue synthesisers and intricate rhythms, with influences of samba, afrobeat, the deep dubscapes of rhythm & sound and most recently the more interesting end of 140bpm bass music. this ep is his first vinyl release since the late 00s and takes in a number of bass-heavy rumblers with classic biggabush twists and turns, starting with the steppas delight of mangrove monkey, relentless subs and skanks of sounds & blues, post-dubstep breaks on dash way com and finishing with a minimal 4/4 fx soundscape on footsie index.

paul hester created his cult moon music label in 1997 as a portal for his own productions and sounds. the label was short-lived, with only 3 releases in it s catalogue, all produced by hester himself. those few releases on moon are now highly sought after among house and techno aficionados who are forever seeking that deeper groove. the interesting part of this story, beyond the amazing music that was released, is that there are many other tracks that never saw the light of the day, thus leaving the full moon story untold. the electric wig ep was the first release on the label and is here in fully remastered reissue form, with all racks lovingly transferred from paul hester s private, personal dat stash. classic, deep uk techno sounds from the pre-millenium era, re-presented for the first time for 2017 s dancefloors. across these 2 tracks and 2 lock grooves we are treated to a sound that is timeless and will undoubtedly gain paul hester new fans while reminding those of us who were there in the late 90 s about his subtle and uniquely fresh production style.
